A good starting point

The original baseboard (200mm x 1550mm)

Fairly standard 12mm plywood construction with 45mm dia. lightening holes added.

The creek basin was also formed with layers of contoured plywood.

In the dying days of my Japanese N scale modelling era in early 2020, with yet more household space restrictions, l began building a small shelf layout baseboard (200mm x 1550mm) with the view to creating a space to shunt my collection of Japanese locomotives and container wagons. The plan was solid, the tried and test Inglenook shunting puzzle... but my heart just wasn't in the project. I took a deep breath and began the process of selling my sizeable Japanese N collection via eBay.

After nearly 25 years of daydreaming my Queensland Railways modelling journey final began with a chance afternoon visit to Aurora Model Trains in June 2020.  I personally try to avoid spontaneous model railway purchases so I was rather shocked to find myself driving home carrying Wuiske Models Class 1720 locomotive, a single point and a few lengths of 12mm Peco track.

Excited, but not entirely sure what I was going to do with the items now I had them, I went out to the shed and lay the track over my old Japanese baseboard. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the track plan in 12mm HO was almost the exact foot print as my original N plan!

In the following days I began to work up a few ideas for a layout theme...
