An aerial view of the yard in 1987. |
Built in the early 1980s and operating into the 1990s the Hile Transport yard was located behind the South bound platform of Rocklea Station on the Beenleigh Line. From Monday to Friday, a huge variety of goods were loaded and shunted back and forth in preparation for Train 6678's daily run up to Toowoomba, Warwick and beyond. Every day something different was being loaded!
A great view from the footbridge that really captures the flavour of the yard - Credit Stephen Robson |
Rollingstock allocated to Train 6678 predominately included:
HWO open wagons-
QLX, QLXP and QLXM - box louvred wagons
Rollingstock occasionally merged into the train for the journey up to the Downs:
HO and HJS open wagons -
PYC, BMA and PCO/PCUY container flat wagons -
OLE and OLO tank wagons -

A huge thank you to Arthur Hayes! Apart from being a talented QR modeller and having vast amount of knowledge about Queensland Railways, Arthur also happened to be one of the yard supervisors (or ASM Assistant Station Masters) at the Hile Transport yard during the period I am modelling.
For anyone interested in the Hile Transport yard and QR modelling in general, his Westgate - South Western Rail blog is an amazing resource!
